One of Brazil’s leading architects and designers, Carlos Motta has been a reference in wood furniture design since 1978. Graduating in Architecture in 1976 in São Paulo, he moved to California, where he worked as a designer and cabinetmaker in Santa Cruz while studying construction techniques at Cabrillo College. He later expanded his knowledge in Finland, researching molded and rolled wood techniques, and in 1978 founded the Atelier Carlos Motta in Vila Madalena, São Paulo — a space dedicated to furniture, architecture, utilitarian objects, sculptures, and special commissions.
Motta personally oversees every step of the creative process, ensuring that each piece reflects his pursuit of the obvious, the simple, the respectful, and the long-lasting. Deeply committed to environmental and social responsibility, he prioritizes ecologically certified or reclaimed wood, creating pieces that are strong, durable, and elegant, with minimal environmental impact. His passion for Brazil — especially its natural beauty — is a constant source of inspiration.
Over the years, Carlos Motta has participated in numerous exhibitions in Brazil and abroad, including Brazil Faz Design (Milan, Italy), the International Biennial of Design (Saint-Étienne, France), and Object Brazil – 500 Years of Design (Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, Brazil). His career has been recognized with multiple awards, such as the Hors Concours Award at the IX Prêmio do Museu da Casa Brasileira, First Place – Aluizio Magalhães Prize at the V Competition of Industrial Design, and First Place – Best Furniture Design at the II Prêmio do Museu da Casa Brasileira.
Guided by the counterculture spirit of the 1970s — with values of ecology, sustainability, and community — Motta’s work unites craftsmanship, timeless design, and environmental ethics, securing his place as one of the most respected names in Brazilian design.
